White Island, New Zealand

This is the site of the seismic recorder and transmitter that were damaged by Thursday's eruption and we were here to set it back up. This is a permanent camera and seismograph with real-time data sent back to GNS New Zealand. Latest images of White Island from their on-site cameras are available on this site: http://www.geonet.org.nz/volcano/activity/white-island/index.html.
Note the white grey ash deposited in the eruption contrasts markedly with the red (oxidised) older land surface and while the ash did not quite reach the site, but the recording equipment was no doubt damaged by the turbulent hot gas cloud that the eruption consisted of.
