The Warrumbungles, NSW
The Warrumbungles are an old basaltic volcanic centre in western New South Wales, 35 Kms from the town of Coonabarabran. It was likely a large sheild volcano with several scoria cones on its fanks. The volcano was active some 13 million years ago, and since then the main process acting on the volcano have been erosion and downcutting. This has left a number of spectacular structures that were once part of the inside of the volcano including dykes and a numbers of different volcanic plugs. Well worth a day or two hiking there.
I supervised a B.Sc Honours project on a part of the Warrumbungles Volcano. The thesis details are: Daniel Heley, 1999, The Geology of an Eastern portion of the Warrumbungle Volcano, Central-Northern New South Wales. University of New South Wales. Awarded 1st Class honours. |
