I have separate links for the 2 of New Zealand's Volcanoes that are off-shore. So these volcanoes are those that are on the mainland and within the Rotorua - Taupo Volcanic Zone. New Zealand's Tongariro National Park is a place for all geologist to spend some time at as there are 3 andesitic composite cone volcanoes close to each other, Mount Tongariro, Mount Ngauruhoe, and Mount Ruapehu. Mount Taranaki is another andesitic composite cone that is characteristically cone-shaped. Then there is the volcanoes in the Rotorua area with Mt Tarawera being a rhyolite dome complex, with a shape typical of a dome. The "super volcano" in New Zealand is not a prominent mountain, but a prominent lake-filled caldera known as Lake Taupo. Lastly, the city of volcanoes is Auckland where there is over 50 basaltic volcanic eruption centres, from scoria cones to lake-filled maars. |
