XPL phomicrograph showing one happy and one not so happy plagioclase phenocryst. The larger plagioclase is slightly deformed as well as being absorbed along its margins, indicating it was unhappy in the melt that crystallised to form the groundmass. The smaller phenocryst being of a slightly different composition was at equilibrium in the melt. XPL |
