Closer view of the palaeosol (old soil) beneath the lava flow that was developed on the previous "river bank". A nice well developed, thick A horizon, indicating a stable slope environment prior to being overwhelmed by the lava flow. The heat from the flow bleached the top of the soil and there is no evidence of "steam" activity here. |
