Close up of a part of the old Macquarie River sediment and the effects of having the basalt flowing over it. There is no obvious welding of the sand but there is pervasive iron staining of the sediment as a product of the hot fluids moving through and from these sediments. The well rounded clasts of vein quartz (chalcedony) are conspicuous. The sediment is quite obviously an erosion product of Bathurst Granite on which the flow is overlying. |
